The DAR Insignia is the official symbol of the National Society and should always be treated with dignity and respect. In the form of a spinning wheel and distaff, the Insignia is worn at the bottom of the official ribbon. Most new members purchase the “Starter Set” which consists of the basic insignia; the Chapter Bar, Ancestor Bar, and the Official Insignia. Approval for purchase is required.

This 14K gold DAR Official Insignia measures 1” x 1 ½”. The Historic Colonial Insignia features thirteen 3.5mm gemstones and rare minerals that represent the 13 colonies, plus a ¼ carat diamond in the center for added sparkle! It is only worn attached to the DAR ribbon.

The gems and minerals are arranged by the date each colony ratified the U.S. Constitution (clockwise):
1. Delaware (December 7, 1787): Moonstone
2. Pennsylvania (December 12, 1787): Amethyst
3. New Jersey (December 18, 1787): Blue Quartz
4. Georgia (January 2, 1788): Lazulite
5. Connecticut (January 9, 1788): Tourmaline
6. Massachusetts (February 6, 1787): Rubellite
7. Maryland (April 28, 1788): Gold Quartz
8. South Carolina (May 23, 1788): Garnet
9. New Hampshire (June 21, 1788): Aquamarine
10. Virginia (June 25, 1788): Spessartite
11. New York (July 26, 1788): Quartz Crystal
12. North Carolina (November 21, 1789): Emerald
13. Rhode Island (May 29, 1790): Green Jade

Required engraving of the member's national number appears on the back of the pin. The members’ name can be engraved optionally at no additional cost. Classic engraving is available and will cost an additional $10.00. For an example, please visit DAR Insignia Store FAQs.

Important information from the Insignia Committee webpage: DAR insignia and pins should be worn with business professional attire and formal evening attire, which includes mix and match or coordinating skirt suits and pants suits, day dresses, tea-length dresses, evening gowns, and other formal evening attire. If you are wearing casual attire such as denim jeans, yoga pants, and other casual clothing, please do not wear your DAR insignia and pins. The DAR Handbook states, "The insignia pin may be worn with attire appropriate for DAR occasions, which includes pants and jackets."

This DAR Official Insignia may only be worn by DAR members on the official Insignia ribbon according to the most current "Placement of DAR Insignia and Pins on Official Ribbon" document found on the Insignia Committee webpage.
