Ohio Christian Waldschmidt Homestead
The Christian Waldschmidt Homestead is a museum complex owned and operated by the Ohio Society Daughters of the American Revolution. Revolutionary War veteran Christian Waldschmidt came to Ohio in the 1790s and was instrumental in establishing the local community of New Germany as well as bringing tradesmen and industry to the area. During the Civil War, New Germany and its vicinity became part of Camp Dennison – a general training center, recruiting depot, and hospital post for the Union Army. Over the years Waldschmidt’s property fell into disrepair and the main house was ultimately donated to the Ohio Society in 1941. Ohio Daughters have made many improvements over the years, and the two stone houses on this property, which serve as museum buildings, date to the early 1800s and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
