The French Alliance pin may be worn as commemorative pin or as a state of service pin according to the following guidance:

  • Commemorative: Recognize the alliance the United States of America had with the French government during the American Revolution. The French Alliance pin features a ship in the design that symbolizes France's commitment to run British blockades in order to provide supplies, and their timely arrival to help secure victory at Yorktown.
  • State of Service: Members whose DAR approved patriot ancestor's state of service is France may wear this pin in recognition of that service. Approval required.

When this commemorative pin or state of service pin is worn by DAR members on the official Insignia ribbon, it must be placed according to the most current "Placement of DAR Insignia and Pins on Official Ribbon" document found on the Insignia Committee webpage.

When not worn on the official ribbon, DAR members may only wear this commemorative pin as a brooch, not on a right-side ribbon. When non-members wear this commemorative pin, they should demonstrate pride in all DAR stands for by wearing it only when dressed nicely and in a respectful manner.
