DAR Insignia Laser Conversion Strategy

Laser Engraving Conversion - FAQ

1. Q: What is Laser Engraving, and how does it differ from Classic (Diamond-Drag) Engraving?

A:  Laser Engraving is a state of the art, high-precision method that uses a focused beam of light to permanently mark the surface of a material. In our case, this process creates dark, legible, and detailed inscriptions on insignia items. Laser engraving offers several advantages: it is highly accurate, consistent, and efficient, producing clean lines and a refined appearance. This method is particularly well-suited for intricate text or designs and is our new complimentary standard due to its improved visibility and faster production times.

In contrast, Classic Engraving, also known as diamond-drag engraving, is a traditional mechanical process that involves using a diamond-tipped tool to physically etch into the surface of the item. The tool is dragged across the metal, leaving a permanent impression with a subtle, engraved finish. For those who already have ancestor bars or other pins engraved using classic engraving, it may be desirable to continue having their pins engraved using classic engraving to provide a more uniform appearance across their collection of pins.

While both methods produce permanent markings, laser engraving offers higher visual contrast and efficiency, while classic engraving reflects a more traditional, tactile style. At DAR Insignia, we now offer laser engraving as our complimentary option, and classic engraving as a $10 premium upgrade for those who prefer the traditional look.

2. Q: What is the difference in appearance between Laser and Classic engraving?

A: Laser and Classic (diamond-drag) engraving use two different techniques, which result in distinct visual finishes:

  • Laser Engraving produces a dark, high-contrast mark that appears almost printed on the surface. The text is crisp, clean, and easy to read, making it ideal for visibility and detail.
  • Classic Engraving is etched into the surface using a diamond-tip tool. It creates a subtle, engraved impression with a lighter appearance that reflects light differently.

The most noticeable difference is that Laser engraving appears darker and more visible.

  •  Tip: For best comparison, we recommend viewing our engraving samples gallery to see side-by-side examples of both styles before selecting your preference at checkout.

3. Q: Why is Laser Engraving now the standard?

A:  Laser engraving is now the standard at DAR Insignia due to its superior efficiency, clarity, and cost-effectiveness. DAR Insignia is proud to bring this technology in-house so as to pass on the benefits and cost saving to Daughters.  This allows us to pass along the savings to the daughters.

The laser process is fully automated, using computer-guided technology to engrave each item with speed and precision. This results in clearer, more legible inscriptions and significantly faster turnaround times.

While our classic engraving—also known as diamond-drag engraving—is machine-assisted, it still requires operator oversight and more time per item. Each inscription is mechanically etched into the metal, which produces a traditional look but limits production speed and capacity.

As technology advances, laser engraving has proven to be a value-added solution that allows us to maintain high standards of quality while offering a more streamlined and accessible experience for our members.

Classic engraving remains available as an option for those who prefer an etched appearance.

4. Q: Why does Classic Engraving now cost $10 per item?

A: Classic engraving, also known as diamond-drag engraving, involves a more time-intensive process that requires a specially trained employee to operate the machine and oversee the precise etching of each character. Unlike laser engraving, which is fully automated, classic engraving demands greater manual oversight and setup for each item.

The $10 fee helps offset the additional time, labor, and specialized handling required for this traditional method. It ensures we can continue offering this option to members who prefer the engraved aesthetic while maintaining production quality and service levels.

Laser engraving is now complimentary and offers a faster, more cost-efficient alternative with enhanced visibility.

5. Q: Can I choose between Classic and Laser Engraving? Will my previous pins still match?

A: Yes. Both Laser and Classic (diamond-drag) engraving options are available for most eligible insignia items. Members can select their preferred engraving style during the checkout process.

If you have previously purchased pins with Classic engraving and wish to maintain a consistent, uniform appearance, you may continue selecting the Classic engraving option. This is especially helpful for members who are adding to heirloom collections or matching multi-generational pins.

Please note:

  • Laser engraving is the new complimentary standard and is available on most items.
  • Classic engraving is offered as a $10 premium upgrade.

6. Q: Can Laser Engraving be done on all pins?

A: Laser engraving is available for the majority of our insignia items. However, it cannot be applied to gold-plated items, due to the nature of the material. For these items, Classic engraving is the only available option and will be automatically presented at checkout.

7. Q: What happens to items already in production or recently ordered?

A: All engraved items ordered prior to June 3, 2025 will be processed according to the engraving preferences and pricing in place at the time of purchase. During that period, Classic engraving was complimentary, and Laser engraving was offered as a $25 upgrade.

Beginning June 3, 2025, our updated engraving structure will take effect:

  • Laser engraving will become complimentary.
  • Classic engraving will be available for a $10 fee per item.

These updates will apply only to new orders placed on or after June 3, 2025. No changes will be made to orders already in production.

8. Q: Is Laser Engraving permanent?

A: Laser engraving creates a permanent mark by altering the surface of the material, and it does not rub off under normal conditions. It is a widely trusted method known for its durability, clarity, and precision.

We remain committed to offering high-quality personalization and will continue to monitor and address material-specific performance to ensure member satisfaction.

9. Q: Will my order ship faster with Laser engraving?

A: Orders are fulfilled in the order in which they are received.  During periods of high demand, engraving turnaround times may vary depending on the number of items in the queue. While laser engraving improves overall efficiency, we cannot guarantee faster shipping in all cases.

Laser engraving is typically a faster process than Classic (diamond-drag) engraving. Because it is computer-guided and less labor-intensive, items selected for laser engraving usually move through production more quickly.

We recommend placing orders early, when possible, especially during peak seasons or prior to major events. Also, please note, approval delays can slow engraved pin orders. Please Note:  Pins requiring approval will impact fulfilment time.

10. Q: Will laser engraving affect the quality or condition of my pin?

A: No. Laser engraving is a non-contact process that uses a focused beam of light to inscribe the surface. It does not apply physical pressure to the item, which helps minimize the risk of scratching, warping, or other surface damage during production. It is a safe and precise method that maintains the structural integrity and quality of the pin.
