Our country stands on the eve of a grand anniversary, and DAR is preparing to celebrate in a big way! This pin, the tenth in a Limited 250th Anniversary series, commemorates Filippo Mazzei.

Filippo Mazzei was an Italian-born Patriot of the American Revolution. In 1773, Mazzei traveled to Virginia where he became friends with Thomas Jefferson. During his time in Virginia, Mazzei was a physician, winemaker and arms dealer who supported the Revolutionary cause. He authored articles in the Virginia Gazette including these words from 1774 translated from Italian by Thomas Jefferson, “All men are by nature equally free and independent. Such equality is necessary in order to create a free government. All men must be equal to each other in natural law.” Mazzei provided inspiration for the phrase “all men are created equal” in the Declaration of Independence. Filippo Mazzei’s significant patriotic contributions are honored with the beautiful commemorative: A Zealous Defender: Filippo Mazzei Pin.

When this commemorative pin is worn by DAR members on the official Insignia ribbon, it must be placed according to the most current "Placement of DAR Insignia and Pins on Official Ribbon" document found on the Insignia Committee webpage.

When not worn on the official ribbon, DAR members may only wear this commemorative pin as a brooch, not on a right-side ribbon. When non-members wear this commemorative pin, they should demonstrate pride in all DAR stands for by wearing it only when dressed nicely and in a respectful manner.

Show your support of DAR's mission by adding the A Zealous Defender: Filippo Mazzei Pin to your Insignia collection today!
